McAfee Knob on the Appalachian Trail is a part of Virginia's Triple Crown hike along with Tinker Cliffs and Dragon's Tooth. This painting is a commissioned piece. I always do a smaller one first (which you can see on this website) so the client has a good idea what the large piece will look like. This one was 36" x 48". I enjoy working with people to create that special piece and I love painting large!
McAfee Knob is one of the most photographed overlooks on the Appalachian Trail and is featured in the movie "A Walk in the Woods" with Robert Redford. It's one of the majestic natural beauties just down the road from me.
McAfee Knob is on Catawba Mountain in Catawba near Salem and Roanoke, Virginia.

I grew up exploring the outdoors here in Southwest Virginia. My family would often go for long drives and end up hiking in the woods where my parents would identify plants and trees and point out animal tracks as they taught us to appreciate the awesomeness of God's creation. I can still remember the first time I saw a pink "Ladies Slipper" growing up out of a pile of leaves deep in a forest. Those adventures with my family still inspire my landscape paintings today but I'm also blessed with a group of friends who love to paint outdoors. Together, we've gone places -both physically and artistically- I'd never have gone alone.
