My dad and I had been exploring some back roads one fall morning when we happened by this turn in Goose Creek. It was lunchtime so I took some photos for reference later on in the studio. This is a place I have painted several times since then but this piece won the Marie Utt Hole award in the Sidewalk Art Show in Roanoke Va. and is still one of my favorites.

I grew up exploring the outdoors here in Southwest Virginia. My family would often go for long drives and end up hiking in the woods where my parents would identify plants and trees and point out animal tracks as they taught us to appreciate the awesomeness of God's creation. I can still remember the first time I saw a pink "Ladies Slipper" growing up out of a pile of leaves deep in a forest. Those adventures with my family still inspire my landscape paintings today but I'm also blessed with a group of friends who love to paint outdoors. Together, we've gone places -both physically and artistically- I'd never have gone alone.
