A collector asked me to do some fine art paintings of his alma mater, Virginia Military Institute in Lexington VA, and this is a study for one of them. It's amazing me to how the color of the buildings can look so different depending on the lighting conditions. There were beautiful blue skies that morning with layers of clouds above making a shadow on the grass but the barracks were lit with brilliant sunlight.

I grew up exploring the outdoors here in Southwest Virginia. My family would often go for long drives and end up hiking in the woods where my parents would identify plants and trees and point out animal tracks as they taught us to appreciate the awesomeness of God's creation. I can still remember the first time I saw a pink "Ladies Slipper" growing up out of a pile of leaves deep in a forest. Those adventures with my family still inspire my landscape paintings today but I'm also blessed with a group of friends who love to paint outdoors. Together, we've gone places -both physically and artistically- I'd never have gone alone.
